Enter Development Site (Password Required) FOQUS-LA is a multidisciplinary USGS effort that serves to coordinate activities of related ongoing USGS projects in the Los Angeles region to develop new, detailed, stratigraphic models that define, in three dimensions, the geometry and physical-properties of water-bearing sediment in the greater Los Angeles basin. With support and cooperation from outside collaborators and clients, our ultimate objective is to incorporate new geologic data and analytical techniques into a unified a regional-scale stratigraphic model that will significantly add to our understanding of how sedimentation, deformation and geochemical processes control groundwater flow and the distribution of seismic hazards. Understanding these controls and accurately characterizing the physical properties of the sediment in the basin address a number of societal concerns. These include groundwater resource management, the behavior and remediation of natural and industrial contaminants underground, the earthquake potential of buried and exposed faults, and the distribution of earthquake effects, such as surface faulting, ground failure, and amplified ground motions. site houses data and products in development for use by project members
and cooperators. A public site will be available online soon. Public inquiries
